The Picnic Day Game!

I’m going to a picnic, and I’m bringing…

Apricot cobbler, Banana cream pie, Cherry bars in a jar, Diva doggie bites, Emeril’s Strawberry Lemonade, Fingerling potato salad with honey-thyme vinaigrette, Gugelhopf twister, Honey graham roll-ups, Incredible “Rabbit” Pineapple Tarts/Rolls, Jam jewels, Kirschmichel, Lime cranberry fizz, Mint sundae brownie, Nice mini biscuit sandwiches, Orange nut ring, Pan-bagnat provencal, Quick lemon bread, and…

RHUBARB RUGUH-LOVE!

Louise at Months of Edible Celebrations is hosting a Picnic Day Game in honor of International Picnic Day and National Picnic Month in July. All the letters above represent dishes that bloggers are “bringing” to Louise’s online picnic game! I chose “R” for rhubarb “ruguh-love”, which is what the creators called their own version of rugelach when customers kept asking for “that dessert I love!” True to their name, I made these last week for a get-together, and my friends couldn’t stop saying how much they loved the “ruguh-love”!

I only made two substitutions to the filling. Instead of the raspberry preserves and chopped walnuts, I used roasted rhubarb and chopped pistachios.

When I saw this being made on The Martha Stewart show, Martha herself used apricot preserves. This dessert was really tasty and fun to make, and I like how the recipe is open to interpretation with the jam and nuts. Happy International Picnic Day and National Picnic Month!

That’s a clever word play on rugelach, and your version looks scrumptious too! I wouldn’t make these for a mere picnic though, they look more for a posh high tea served somewhere indoors :-).
