ffwD: Mixed Berry Clafoutis

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

I’ve always been wary of clafoutis. Maybe it’s because the name sounds odd, and I want to pronounce it as “ca-flou-tee” instead. Maybe it’s because the sunken cherries leave behind holes that look unappetizing. Whatever the reason, I didn’t know what to expect when I made this week’s ffwD assignment.

Since I’m not a whole-cherry fan, I used a frozen bag of mixed berries but purposefully left out the strawberries, judging them to be too big against the blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. I also used more berries than needed to prevent the look of sunken berry holes. I didn’t wait for the clafoutis to cool before I tasted it, but I was surprised by its light, fluffy texture. Had I known clafoutis tasted like a sweet, moist, cloud/custard-like pudding, I would’ve made it a lot sooner! Success! Now, all that needs to be done is to change the name…

This mixed berry clafoutis was made as a part of French Fridays with Dorie, a group of bloggers who are cooking their way through Dorie Greenspan’s Around My French Table: More Than 300 Recipes from My Home to Yours.

Are you weary or wary of clafoutis? Looks like you made a good one, so my guess is you’re neither:)

If it looks like a raspberry pizza, it’s a raspberry pizza.

Well that’s certainly a recommendation. I like your substitution of the mixed berries–baked cherries sometimes feel too intense to me.

What a delicious looking clafoutis!! I only made my first about a months ago and I know what you mean. Until I tasted my first bite I had no idea what the fuss was about.

Yum! I love clafoutis, in spite of the name, because it’s so versatile — I have used pears and apricots as well as cherries. I don’t think I have ever tried it with berries though — I will have to give it a try!

It’s definitely a difficult word to pronounce and spell. I’m a fan of cherries so when I make one, I’ll use fresh cherries – they’re just not in season at the moment xx

A friend from Finland invited me to lunch and served Clafouti for dessert. It was the first time I ever heard of it or tasted it and was won over immediately. It’s a wonderful dessert.

I’ve never had a clafoutis…looks delicious! Agree with Peachy’s comment that cherries are SO expensive.

With regards to your SF trip, you can get some good deals at the St. Regis, not sure if you’ve checked that hotel out? We love it. And can I recommend The Slanted Door, Betelnut, Greens, and Ghirardelli for lunches / desserts? Amazing food in SF!

I’d eat this for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Berries are super expensive in Japan and I haven’t had any decent berries since I came here. Want to make clafoutis when I get back (I do love clafoutis although I wasn’t sure how to say this name at the beginning!).
