Month-long Birthday Celebration: THIRD WEEK!

Here’s a roundup of my third week of daily birthday “treats”:

*May 17th–After reading how Ei from Cookbook Immersion Project debated whether to purchase Dorie Greenspan’s Baking: From My Home to Yours, I thought the $16.00 price was too good to pass up. So, I bought a copy. And, the price has been lowered even further to $15.60!

*May 18th–I’m still nervous about making my own French macaroons, so I bought pretty professionally made ones (pistachio, raspberry, and vanilla) at Macy’s on State Street.

*May 19th–I bought new springtime lipstick and lip shimmer.

*May 20th–I’ve been needing to clean out and reorganize my bedroom closet for some time now. So, I took the evening to get this project crossed off my list. Just knowing it’s done is treat enough for me (at least for today!) There’s so much more room in there now! New shoes may be on the horizon…

*May 21st–Work was more stressful than usual that my left shoulder blade was still throbbing despite a good night’s sleep. Instant remedy? A 90-minute deep tissue massage at Urban Oasis!

*May 22nd–To maintain the calm feeling from yesterday’s massage, I relaxed by having afternoon tea (pear caramel) at Palm Court in The Drake Hotel.

Golden raisin scones and banana bread

Tea sandwiches: cucumber & pear, egg salad, salmon & mango chutney, roast beef with watercress

Assorted dessert bites

*May 23rd–I finally renewed my subscription to Fitness magazine, one of the few non-law related magazines I read in paper form.

Coming up is my last week of birthday treats, and I need to pull out all the stops especially since Memorial Day is right around the corner! Any suggestions?

The Drake just sounds so fun, never been. This looks like a wonderful month, I haven’t bought new lip shimmer in ages!

Sorry to hear about the $0.40 ‘loss’ due to unfavourable timing. I guess its birthday month so this can be forgiven.

OOOH, you had a GOOD week!! Macarons really are such intimidating little cookies, aren’t they? I’m jealous that you bought Baking. I’m dying to buy it and Nigella Lawson’s How to Eat, but they’re both so enormous, there’s no way I’d sneak them onto the shelf unnoticed. ha! That tea looks amazing. I always talked about going for tea when I lived in DC, but now that I’m in TX (hub is Navy JAG), there’s not much opportunity for it.

I can’t tell you how much I love visiting your blog! It’s an instant pick-me-up! Tea at Drake’s looks so delicious and a very sensible idea. I have a serious cookbook addition – it’s probably something we all have in common. I feel bad I haven’t passed on or posted the awards yet – this will happen tomorrow! Still thrilled
Have a great day – looking forward to your next adventures in birthday month.

What a great way to celebrate you birthday month! Those macs are so lovely – I’ve made French macarons once, and I stood in front of my oven coaxing them to form feet….

Ah – I am still trying to build up macaroon-making courage. One day.

I simply love how you pamper yourself! I’d love to be enjoying the afternoon tea instead of sitting here at my desk!

That tea looks amazing. The sandwiches reminded me on the ones my grandmother made and they were delicious. I have yet to make macarons because the ones I can buy here are so good – and effortless. I hope you continue to enjoy your celebration. I know I’m enjoying it vicariously. Have a great day. Blessings…Mary

Oh my, it sounds like you had a great week. Tea at the Drake, massage, new cookbook and lipstick, macarons?? Awesome! I would say maybe for the last week splurge on some more cookbooks (The Flour Bakery is a good one) or some baking/cooking gear– did you ever get a microplane? Those are my favorite things to buy as treats for myself.

I’m nervous about making macrons too and it sounds like a lot of others are as well. Maybe we should all form a virtual support group! 🙂

Birthday month is a genius idea. That tea luncheon you had looks wonderful! What a blast that must’ve been. I’ve always been afraid to make macaroons too. I’ve only ever had them in France, and I am afraid I will just let myself and my stomach down if I attempt them myself. Maybe someday I will have the courage…
