My first foray into Indian food!

Candy at candy girl posted a recipe for butter chicken not too long ago. This recipe has been needling at me for some time mainly because I’ve been wanting to try my hand at actually making Indian food. I suppose I was slightly intimidated because of all the exotic spices involved that I rarely use. However, when I read through the recipe, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had all the spices on hand! (Six total, mainly from random ffwD recipes.) This dish was the perfect starter recipe for newbies to Indian food. The only drawback was the recipe’s suggested overnight marinate time. Ouch. That’s a long time to wait for butter chicken, but it was worth it. The flavor of the chicken was perfectly seasoned, with the cardamom, coriander and cumin as the highlights. My sister even commented that the dish was “just spicy enough” to where she could handle eating it. I will admit this dish is much better the day it’s made as opposed to the next. I’m not sure why that happened. However, I will definitely be making this dish again. But, next time I’ll shorten the marinate time to 1-2 hours, per Candy’s suggestion.

Great job! While I don’t make ‘Indian’ food, I do make a lot of Trinidadian curries. My kitchen always smells soooooo good when I get to whip out those spices. I’m sure yours did too šŸ™‚

By the way, your rice looks amazing!

I have been trying my hand at Indian food lately too. I am always surprised how easy it is, except the breads that is. I just can’t seem to get the roti to work. Your butter chicken looks great!

Too funny. I made butter chicken this weekend to go along with the broccoli for this weeks FFwD. It must be in the air! (I served mine over rice as well).

Oh man, I loooove butter chicken! Whenever I go to Indian lunch buffets it makes up like 3/4 of my plate. But I’ve never really tried making Indian food before, either. You have inspired me though! I will try out the recipe, it looks awesome šŸ˜€

Looks delicious! I love cooking Indian food, and find that I am always adding one more spice to the spice drawer. Said drawer is now overflowing, but the food is tasty!

It looks like it turned out well!
My guess is that its best the day you make it because of the cream…I find that dishes with cream or cheese don’t do well the next day.

Indian food is the best. I only discovered it a year ago and have thrown a few dishes together and we liked them all.

This looks like another one to try.

Looks lovely! I’m a huge fan of Indian food ever since I studied in London. There were so many fantastic Indian restaurants around my flat that I thought I was in heaven.

This looks fantastic! I have done very little Indian cooking at home, but have prepared and can recommend the Chicken Tikka Masala recipe at It doesn’t take as long to marinade, although I bet it would be awesome if left overnight too.
