Sara Moulton’s Tomato Gratin

20140101_143317

The photo above is the last of the ones taken on my tablet, which served as my emergency backup camera while I waited for my replacement Samsung camera phone. However, don’t let the fuzziness of the photo dissuade you from trying this tomato gratin! My sorority sister (Codename: GPL Mom) gave me “Cooking with the Star Chefs: 60 Delicious Recipes” for Christmas. I had never heard of it, but I’m always happy to receive another cookbook! After automatically skipping the recipes by Rachael Ray, Bobby Flay, and Sandra Lee, I landed on Sarah Moulton’s green tomato gratin recipe. The recipe sounded simple and tasty enough, especially with the parmesan cheese and Ritz cracker topping. Although the recipe was initially for green tomatoes, I included some red ones as well, though they got a bit mushier from the baking than the green slices did. This dish was so delicious that I had it for dinner two nights in a row. This is definitely a tasty way to eat tomatoes! Find the recipe here.

Loved the ingredients – I’m starting to run every food shop around my house / work in my head and think which one might sell marjoram. (I know big supermarkets have it (at least I’ve found it online before, but never in the “physical” supermarkets). Anyway, with marjoram or other herb… YUM!

We never have a huge surplus of green tomatoes in Australia so apart from green tomato relish I’ve never used them that much this gratin looks like a good place to start though.
