My baking lately has been focused on sweets and seriously lacking in the savory department. To remedy this, I found a simple savory breakfast idea from Try It You Might Like It: sausage cheddar biscuits. The original recipe suggested using Trader Joe’s buttermilk biscuits, which I thought was interesting. I was under the impression that all refrigerated tube biscuits tasted the same. However, the Trader Joe’s biscuit dough had a different texture than I was expecting, so maybe that’s why they were recommended.
Anyway, I made mini biscuit “bites” by taking one large biscuit, cutting it into thirds, and flattening the thirds into the wells of a mini muffin pan. These breakfast bites tasted really delicious! The Trader Joe’s buttermilk biscuit was rather tasty and held up well against the savory sausage and gooey cheddar cheese topping. And since these bites were miniature, they weren’t as messy as the large biscuit would’ve been. Now I’m wondering how this recipe would taste with ham and Swiss cheese…

I vote for ham and swiss for morning drive time folks this week. Curious to hear their opinions, but I’m sure these turned out great: your skills plus smoked pork products and cheese – hard to go wrong.

I started eating biscuits, particularly ham or sausage biscuits, when we lived in the South and they are still my favorite breakfast food. I would love some of these right now since I haven’t had breakfast yet. I will pick up some buttermilk biscuits the next time I go to Trader Joe’s and try this recipe. Thanks for sharing it!

Trader Joe’s is one of my favorite places to shop. I have never tried their refrigerated biscuits but I will now. These look like such a nice breakfast treat.
Oct 23, 2011 @ 10:25:51
I wonder if the texture would change a whole lot if you make your own biscuit batter? … I never knew that Trader Joe’s had a tube biscuits!!
I bet some chives would taste good!

Oh, now these look like little bites from heaven. Positively sinful (wait a minute, that may be a contradiction in terms
). Love the combo of cheese and sausage – especially spicy sausage!!

Yum. I will have to try those. They look similar to the cheddar sausage mini-muffins I make this time of year. Sort of like sausage balls in mini-muffin pans. My mouth is watering to taste one of yours!!
